Explorer Training Print this page
The Explorers held their monthly training at 12036 Pearson Road. They were joined by the fire department new trainees. Safety was highly expressed to the Explorers. If they felt they were putting themselves in more danger than what they were comfortable with, they needed to tell the trainers. The first thing they learned was to inspect the house as they walk up to it. They were to look for and find hazards such as telephone and power lines. The Explorers had the opportunity to work with the ladders from Engine 42. They learned how to raise and lower the 24ft extension ladder together as a team and how to set it at the right angle to make it safe to ascend to the roof. They each had a turn to set the 14ft roof ladder. They were shown how to sound a roof to check if it was safe to continue. They had the opportunity to try their hand at search and rescue. They learned that communication is key between members that are actively searching in the house. They where shown how to enter the house and do an efficient search pattern. As they went through the house, they had different scenarios thrown at them. For example, the officer held their last team member back and they had to back track to find him. This was to show them that losing a member is very dangerous and very time consuming. They closed the nights training session with a critique from the officers.
